Remote Control for Thymio II

The thymio remote control

How to remote control Thymio?

The preset purple mode (obedient) makes Thymio controllable with our remote control.

Since the 1.5.5 update it is possible to use the remote control in VPL's advanced mode with the new remote control blocks (picture on the right).

Finally, it is possible to use the remote control with the text programming language Aseba. To do so, you need to use the variable rc.5command == N or N = the number referring to the remote control button (image below)

Other compatible remote controls

As already said, you can use as remote control of your Thymio any IR remote control that supports RC5 encoding. The following is a list of remote controls that have been tested directly by users to be compatible with Thymio:

Test Procedure

In order to test quickly if your remote control works with Thymio II you can select the purple behaviour, point the remote control towards the robot and try buttons 2, 4, 6 and 8 which should control direction and speed of the robot. The red light near the IR sensor of the robot will flash. At this Forum topic you can find a discussion on this subject.

Use of several remote controls

When working together in a group, for example, it can be interesting to use several robots with remote controls at the same time. Unfortunately the remote controls have quite a large range so that one device may affect all the robots in a room. To avoid this it is possible to configure each remote control and each robot differently so that one remote control only affects the corresponding robot. The RC-5 codes describe two pieces of information which are sent, namely the command and the system number (or address). The command depends on which key is depressed on the remote control, while the address depends on the device to be controlled, e.g. TV, VCR, DVD, SAT. Thus one can imagine setting up each of the several remote controls for different devices (TV, VCR etc.) and having each Thymio II react only to the commands from one remote control. However this requires special programming which could be built upon the basic behaviour.

Here for example are the program codes to use with the Microspot URC-100 Remote Control showing the corresponding RC5 address values received by Thymio II (to change the codes, select the remote control mode, press "set-up" until the led becomes red, then type the code):
