After several nested 'if' commands there were not enough 'end' statements, but the compiler message didn't help.

Compiler says 'expecting string', which is not specific

After a 'onevent timer0' line in a program for Thymio I had code with several nested 'if' statements.
The compiler gave an error message saying that it expected a string. It seems to me that it should be possible for the compiler to give a more specific message, i.e. that it is expecting an 'end' statement.
