Summary:

At the launch of asebastudio, a connection dialog opens. My thymio appears in the serial list (under /dev/ttyACM0), but when trying to connect, the same window reappears (connection probably failed), without any error message allowing me to try to solve the problem. Any hint of the possible source of the problem?

This is a known problem. Modem-manager is messing up with ALL the serial port connected to a PC by trying to detect a modem. It opens the serial port and then write random (well, AT) data on it.

Please report this problem to ubuntu so they fix it this is a complete nonsens to write data to an unknown peripheral. They are lucky to not burn anything.

Otherwise, plug in the robot, wait a few minutes and then try again (when modemmanager gives up).

Waiting a few minutes (in fact hours) wasn't sufficient, I think I'll have to somehow deactivate modem-manager if it is causing that…

Make sure your user has read/write access to /dev/ttyACM0. I guess it must be in the "callout", "dialup" or "modem" group.

Joining the dialout group solved the problem (sudo adduser username dialout)

This solved the problem using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for me too, but I needed to log out of Linux and log in again after the 'adduser' to make it effective.
