It was indeed a problem of permissions. Adding sudo before the asebaswitch command was enough to make it work.

This problem occurred on several machines, others on others it worked fine.
Right now I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 and installed aseba with the corresponding package.
When I try to connect, I get the following output:

simu@simu-Samsung-Ubuntu:~$ hcitool scan Scanning ... 10:00:E8:52:C3:F6 e-puck_1489 simu@simu-Samsung-Ubuntu:~$ sudo rfcomm bind 0 10:00:E8:52:C3:F6 simu@simu-Samsung-Ubuntu:~$ asebaswitch -v ser:device=/dev/rfcomm0 Cannot open serial port.

Please let me know if you need additional information.
