Indeed all robots must be tethered, but the asebaswitch program on the PC can serve as relay between all the robots. asebaswitch can also allow to remap the identifiers, so that two Thymios can be used in the same network using the same node names, but with different nodeId. Studio version 1.2.1 and later properly support that, including for loading/saving.

I do not understand very well: do you mean that the Thymios can communicate between them and eventually with Mindstorm ported on Aseba. But all the robots (Thymios and Mindstorm) in this case must be tethered to the PC with an USB cable, right?

You can use asebaswitch to have multiple aseba targets communicating in the same network. You can even put two Thymios together this way, see the corresponding page on the Wiki. You need at least aseba version 1.2.1 (current release candidate) for this to work properly.

But also once ported Aseba to the Mindstorm VM, how Mindstorm and Thymio will interact togheter after being programmed by the same software environment? This is still not clear to me…

At the moment there are two possible interactions:

mechanicaly, by means of motor movement and sensors

teoretically via IR signals, but only Mindstorm can send IR signals by means of a special actuator produced by a third party (see there). It must be checked if the IRLink block can be programmed in order to send RC5 commands that can be understood by Thymio.

The best would be to port the Aseba VM to the Mindstorm, but this is a significant work for which we do not have the resources. I someone would volunteer to do it, we would highly appreciate it.

I have stopped this activity regarding i2c expansion because it requires to modify also the firmware of thymio and I don't have all the stuff needed for working well (especially the PIC programmer just in case you "brick" the thymio).

I have received an inquiry about somehow integrating Thymio and Mindstorm. Are there any projects or ways to involve both robots if you have them both? Or ways to cross use components- I know Thymio is LEGO compatible, but any way for more of an interaction between the robots or electronic components?

I came across the "Thymio i2c I/O expansion" page (is there any progress on this front?) If there would be, what would that mean for the above questions.

Thanks!
